The generative AI tool, launched in November 2022, has already impacted earnings, particularly for those specializing in writing-related tasks. A study by researchers from Washington University and New York University found that freelancers most exposed to AI experienced over a 5% decline in earnings by April 2023. This poses a threat to the 39% of the US workforce engaged in freelance work, as highlighted by Upwork’s record last year. Sheraz Shoukat, a Fiverr freelancer, notes a significant decrease in demand, echoing the sentiments of many freelancers globally.
The rise of generative AI tools, like ChatGPT, raises concerns about job automation, especially for narrowly specialized freelance workers. Oxford economist Carl Benedikt Frey suggests that workers focused on tasks like copy editing, translation, or web design may face greater risks of automation. Mark Muro from the Brookings Institution warns of a potential reduction in demand for freelance work, especially in higher-exposure occupations like marketing, media, writing, and advertising, as AI tools become adept at certain job tasks.
Despite the challenges, there are silver linings. Some freelancers have adapted by becoming AI content editors, experiencing a surge in demand. Fiverr searches for freelancers with AI-content-editing skills increased by over 7,000% in the US between May and October. Others, like 56-year-old part-time freelance writer Ben Baker, have found success by providing expertise that AI lacks. His advice to fellow freelancers includes breathing life into writing, showcasing expertise, and incorporating real people into content.
As the AI boom reshapes the job landscape, freelancers are urged to explore new avenues and carve out niches that set them apart from the capabilities of ChatGPT. Adaptability, expertise, and a human touch continue to be invaluable assets in navigating the evolving freelance terrain.
